Shelby American Rolls Out Limited-Edition 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe

If you're a vintage car buff, no doubt you've pined for the ever-elusive chance to drive or even own a classic Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, perhaps the most iconic of American sports coupes. We here at E3 Spark Plugs certainly have. Well, now's our chance - sort of.

Shelby American recently debuted the two versions of its 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe at the Gordon McCall's Motorworks Revival. The exclusive event, held at Monterey Airport's Jet Center, is the official kickoff of the annual Monterey Car Week and features the crème de la crème of automotive and aircraft.

The original Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupes were built specifically to take on Ferrari and its 250 GTO in the GT class on the track. Their shape was developed by Shelby's Pete Brock for a more aerodynamic aesthetic, which proved critical to competitiveness over the extended straightaways that were more common to continental circuits back in the day. Just six were built between 1964 and 1965 before famed designer and racer Carroll Shelby was reassigned to the Ford GT40 project to compete at the 24 hours of Le Mans.

One of the two limited-edition anniversary models sports a fiberglass while the other is crafted of aluminum. Both were created in homage to the iconic model that that became road-racing royalty after being driven to victory at the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Sports Car World Championship in 1965. No American car has taken the title since.

Want to park one in your driveway? The aluminum and fiberglass models, sans drivetrain, will set you back $349,995 and $179,995, respectively.
