Steve McQueen’s Ferrari 275 GTB/4 goes up for auction in August.
Late actor Steve McQueen was as well known for his love of all things automotive as he was for his counterculture Hollywood films. And now, you’ve got a chance to park one of the King of Cool’s coolest classic rides in your own garage. Purchased while the actor and racing enthusiast was filming 1968′ Bullitt, playing an all guts-no glory San Francisco cop becomes chasing the underworld kingpin that killed the witness in his protection, McQueen’s 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 will cross the block during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, August 15-16 in Monterrey, California.
Actor Steve McQueen was an avid race car and motorcycle enthusiast.
While he wasn’t on a movie set, McQueen often could be found on the track. He raced cars in the British Touring Car Championship, 12 Hours of Sebring and at Brands Hatch; and motorcycles in the Baja 1000, Mint 400 and Elsinore Grand Prix, among other events. He also loved to collect. At the time of his death in 1980, McQueen owned several classic racecars and more than 100 motorcycles. And in 1999, he was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, credited with contributions including financing the film On Any Sunday, supporting a team of off-road riders and enhancing the public image of motorcycling overall.
But back to that gorgeous red Ferrari. After leaving McQueen’s garage, the car was owned by fellow actor Guy Williams, known for playing Don Diego de la Vega in TV’s Zorro, Will Cartwright in Bonanza, and Dr. John Robinson in the Sci-Fi series Lost in Space. It’s undergone a full restoration and is certified by Ferrari Classiche, the luxury carmaker’s restoration department. Interested in placing a bid? Bidder registration is $300.
