Motor Trend Names 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Car of the Year

Noting its "world-class sports car performance and dynamics," the automotive pundits at Motor Trend have named their 2016 Car of the Year - the 2016 Chevy Camaro.

The sixth generation of Camaro, the new ride is powered with Alpha build, designed to improve handling, shed weight and boost speed and engine power. It's got a 3.6-liter V6 engine, 335 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque. It's capable of hitting 60 miles per hour in 5.1 seconds with an automatic transmission, 5.2 seconds with a manual. Design-wise, you'll notice lower, slimmer proportions, broader shoulders and a fastback profile. Behind the wheel, you'll also appreciate its lightweight architecture that lends itself to better handling, improved aerodynamics. The revamped interior includes a flat-bottom steering wheel, high performance seats and an incredible interior spectrum lighting system that flows around the center cluster, console and doors. Choose between 24 colors or select "show mode" for a pulsing, full-color light show.

All in all, the new Camaro is "is one of the finest driving vehicles in the world at any price," says Motor Trend editor-in-chief Edward Loh.

"It's an emotional thing," says Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser. "It's more than a car to us."

The Camaro is one of just seven considered for the distinction this year. Finalists were judged on six criteria, including advancement in design, efficiency, engineering excellence, performance of intended function, safety and value. The runners up are…

  • 2016 Audi TT
  • 2016 BMW 7 Series
  • 2016 Honda Civic
