DSR Sweeps NHRA Funny Car National Finals

Eight months ago, no one knew for certain whether the National Hot Rod Association would be able to pull off a viable championship schedule. For drivers, team owners, crews, sponsors, race officials, and fans, this had to be one of the most mentally stressing years for everyone involved in drag racing’s elite world championship classes. But, when the going got tough, drag racing’s winningest organization capped off the coronavirus-interrupted 2020 Camping World Drag Racing Series with a sweep of the semi-final and final rounds in nitro Funny Car. Don Schumacher Racing dominated the popular division of the 2020 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series by winning all eleven races and sweeping the Dodge NHRA finals to put their stamp on the COVID-19 shortened season.

Driving the Mopar/Pennzoil Dodge Hellcat, Matt Hagan won the final round at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. With a two-round lead over his teammates Tommy Johnson Jr. and Jack Beckman, Hagan arrived in Vegas ready to capture his third Funny Car world championship. In Saturday’s qualifying, teammate Ron Capps made his presence known by posting a 3.902 ET at 327.98 mph to claim Number One qualifier over Hagan’s 3.911 ET at 327.82 mph. Each of the team’s four Funny Car pilots (Matt Hagan, Jack Beckman, Tommy Johnson Jr., and Ron Capps) contributed to the eleven race win streak, which allowed Don Schumacher Racing to occupy the top four points positions in the world championship standings.
