E3 Spark Plugs Highlights the Players in Pro Mod: Steven Whiteley

Nashville, TN, (May 15, 2018)…One of today’s most exciting classes in NHRA drag racing has become the Pro Mod series that is now in its first season, sponsored by E3 Spark Plugs. The 2018 E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by J&A Service is the only one that allows multiple makes of cars, builders and engines to compete on a level playing field. This combination is now drawing ever increasing throngs of fans to each city that Pro Mod races at NHRA. The 2018 season is shaping up again as one packed with thrills as barely hundredths-of-a-second divides the number 1 with the 16th qualifier, from entries topping 30 cars per event.

One of the competing racers is Steven Whiteley, from Grand Junction, CO. Steven began his career early in life at 8 yrs old, racing Jr. Dragsters. Whiteley says his dad (Jim) was racing a ’69 Super Stock Camaro at Bandimere Speedway back when they lived in Greeley, CO. “That’s what got me hooked,” says Whiteley. “When I figured out that kids could race Jr. Dragsters, that was game over.” After the Juniors, Whiteley broke into Top Sportsman for several years, while at the same time gaining his Top Dragster license as well. He followed up with his Pro Mod license in 2013, and began his first year of RPM competition in 2014. Whitely now commands the pilot seat of his 2014 J&A Service/Goodyear Tire, supercharged Cadillac CTS-V.

Whiteley fills his trophy room with quite a few accolades from along the way with awards such as winning the RPM season opener in Gainesville, 2017 and runner-up at the 2017 World Series of Pro Mod in Denver. “We’ve runnered-up more than I’d like,” chuckles Whitely. “Around five at the moment. As of right now we also have the highest qualifying streak, recently taking over the title from Troy Coughlin.” Whiteley plans to compete in the full 12-race NHRA series in 2018. Also in his sights for the year are the World Series of Pro Mod in Denver. Team (Steven) Whitely occasionally runs 1/8 mile for help with testing, having competed in a few PDRA races over the years as well; Rockingham, St. Louis and the Snowbird at Bradenton. He claims his top speed in the ¼ = 5.747 @ 253 +MPH. 25 year old Whitely, already racking up favorites, claims his best day at the track, being his NHRA win at Gainesville.

Ask Whiteley his favorite motorsports hero and he’ll speak as an apple that hasn’t fallen far from the tree, “my old man.” “Growing up, I was a big fan of Greg Anderson,” says Whiteley, “but my dad (Jim Whiteley), would be my no.1 motorsports hero.”

In his own personal time away from the track, Whitely says it’s pretty much work and family. “I’m recently married with 2 children, keeping up on the Dad life, and I work for my parents’ company at J&A Services, in Colorado.” Whitely chuckles, “it keeps me busy (and out of trouble!).” Whitely says “I’m definitely a smart ass – witty when I want to be” – jokingly alluding back to that “trouble.”

A young mid-20’s Whitely has already built a formidable career in a professional class bearing the name of his family business, showing a promising future at the track. Just like Steven Whiteley, E3 appreciates the support from the racers/teams/participants competing in the E3 Spark Plug Pro Mod class of the NHRA and we are excited for the 2018 season. ?Rob Fisher, E3 Director of Motorsports says, “We are very thankful for everyone in the sport and everyone in the stands!”
