E3 Spark Plugs Recommends New Exhibit, “Wrecks! Dramatic Crashes of NASCAR”

What remains of Michael McDowell’s dramatic 2008 crash is on display at the new “Wrecks! Dramatic Crashes of NASCAR” exhibit.

Perhaps even more memorable than the amazing NASCAR wins are the fiery crashes that cause a driver’s teammates and fans to gasp like they’ve taken a collective punch to the gut. If you’re an avid stockcar racing follower, surely a wreck or two has just come to mind. Wonder whatever happened to the wreckage of a few of those cars? Well, you can find out with a visit to the NASCAR Hall of Fame Museum.

Opened on October 12 and running through mid-February, the new Wrecks! Dramatic Crashes of NASCAR exhibit features what’s left of the vehicles involved in some of the most spectacular crashes in the history of stock-car racing, along with video footage of those potentially devastating moments. Fans also will learn about the safety innovations that resulted from studying each of those wrecks.

Featured are a total of 18 items including the original wrecked stock cars and other artifacts related to various NASCAR wrecks. Among them: Michael McDowell’s Toyota that hit the wall and flipped nine times down the tracks during qualifying at Texas in 2008, and Phil Parson’s Pontiac that barrel-rolled in a memorable crash at Talladega in 1983. Both men walked away from these accidents with minor injuries.

Be sure to take the lil’ tykes. Wrecks also features a kids’ play station filled with NASCAR Bashers, a new line of toy cars and haulers that do some way cool transformations. Wreck, rebuild and hit the toy tracks again. But seriously, dads – don’t Bogart all the Bashers. Let the kids play, too.

Which NASCAR wreck do you most remember? Post your thoughts on the E3 Facebook fan page.

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 1 Winner Dan Bunting

Team E3 Racing Tier 1 winner Dan Bunting has finished in the top 10 of the APR series each of the past four years.

Dan Bunting’s competitive boat racing debut was not exactly all he had hoped for. In his very first race, the UIM World Championships in Marietta, Ohio, he barrel-rolled his boat on the eight qualifying lap. The experience might have been enough to send someone of lesser resolve paddling back to shore for a new landlubber’s hobby. But as a career police officer, Bunting had what it took to tough it out and try again. That’s why he’s a new member of Team E3 Racing.

Bunting quickly got his pride and his boat back into shape and headed back into the water in time for the next race. Long story short, he ended his rookie season in 10th place on the America Powerboat Racing (APR) SuperLeague Circuit and not only landed a Rookie of the Year title, but helped his team score the prestigious Betty May Best Dressed Team Award to boot. Today, he’s a team owner and Formula 3 Points champion.

Bunting pilots a Tunnel Boat in the APR Series Tour and has finished in the top 10 in series points each of the past four years. His team, Tunnel Vision Racing, is co-sponsored by Monster Energy, JEGS and the Hard Rock Café. Earlier this year, he decided to put all he’s learned about performance boats and equipment to profitable use and launch ExtremePowerboatRacing.com, an online store offering safety and performance parts for boat racing.

Team E3 Racing's Dan Bunting also is a career police officer.

Meanwhile, Bunting continues his law enforcement career. A police officer since 1993, he has served as a deputy sheriff in Ohio and Colorado and has held the ranks of patrolman, lieutenant and chief of police. So, the number and name of his previous boat, “Five-O” makes sense.

We here at E3 Spark Plugs congratulate Bunting on his continued success in boat racing and his new business endeavor. If you’re thinking about competing on the water, make sure you stock your boat with a set of high-performance racing spark plugs.

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 1 Winner Jason Jiovani

Team E3 Racing's Jason Jiovani has developed a huge following in his home state of Florida.

“Hit the gas and get it sideways,” seems to be a professional motto for Largo, Florida’s Jason Jiovani, one of our first Team E3 Racing Tier 1 winners. Jiovani is in his seventh season in the competitive drifting world and has racked up a mantle full of top 10 finishes. This year, he’ll run the StreetWise Drift in the East Regional US Series and he’s eligible to run the PRO class of Formula D this season. He’s also a Brand Ambassador for NOS Energy Drinks along with friend and fellow racing/drifting competitor Rob Fleming, whom he credits with helping to “revive the heartbeat of drifting in Florida.”

As of press time, Jiovani drives a 1991 Nissan 240SX with a ~400RWHP GM 5.7 LS1 motor running TrickFlow heads and cam combo. Besides competing on the tracks, he also runs all day-to-day aspects of his race team, J1N Racing. These include funding, transport, marketing, partnership management and turning wrenches with help from sponsor All American Street Car Performance. But while he’s a hands-on team owner and racer, he’s quick to credit his team, which includes girlfriend/co-pilot/mechanic’s assistant Hazel, for his success.

Drifting champ Jason Jiovani races and runs all aspects of his J1N Racing team.

When Jiovani’s not behind the wheel, he’s often still on the tracks, volunteering at amateur events as an instructor, course designer and competition judge. On school days, you’ll have to call him “Mr. Jiovani.” And you’ll have to sit still, pay attention and cut it out with the spit-balling right now, young man. Mr. Jiovani supplements his racing career with a substitute teacher gig in Pinellas County schools. While school’s out, he’s a bit more fun, working as a summer camp counselor.

Jiovani’s wrapping up his off-season preparations and is set to hit the tracks with a whole new car look in the next few weeks. That new look will include a loud-and-proud E3 Spark Plugs logo. If you’re a drifting fan, be sure to look for Jiovani on the tracks. And if you’re an up-and coming auto sports competitor, be sure to stock your ride with a set of E3 racing spark plugs for a strong, clean ride and competitive advantage.

World’s Five (Okay, Six with a Tie) Priciest Cars

E3 Spark Plugs loves a beautiful car, whether it’s an old jalopy with serious restoration potential or a gleaming new sports coupe just off the assembly line. That’s a good thing, because we’re much more likely to score the former than one of these. Behold the world’s current most expensive cars.

1. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports, $2,400,000: Not only is it by far the priciest, it’s also the fastest road car in production. It boasts a 267.856 mph top speed, though it’s electronically limited to a paltry 257.91 mph, what with the tires possibly disintegrating and all. The car debuted at the Pebble Beach Concours de ‘Elegance in August 2010 and Bugatti says they’ll only make 30 of them. So, you’d better call in your credit card number now.

2. Pagani Zonda Clinque Roadster, $1,850,000: Only five of these were made and, alas, all five are spoken for. The Roadster can drop 0-60 in 3.4 seconds and has logged a top speed of 217 mph. Its six-speed sequential gearbox allows for gearshifts taking less than 100 milliseconds.

3. Lamborghini Reventón, $1,600,000: The priciest and most powerful Lamborghini ever built hits 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds and is capable of speeds up to 211 mph. Only 20 were made for the road, with one additional car numbered 0/20 produced for the Lamborghini Museum. It’s named for the fighting bull famous for killing Mexican bullfighter Félix Guzmán. The word reventón is Spanish for “explosion” or “burst,” but also has come to refer to a large party or crazy night on the town. In automotive terms, it means “blowout,” as in a flat tire.

3. Koenigsegg Arera R, $1,600,000: Tying for third place in the money game, the Arera R beats the Reventón in the speed game. It can burn 0-60 in just 2.8 seconds and has hit 260 mph, though it’s electronically capped at 235. If you’re hearing Sammy Hagar’s voice in your head and just don’t think you can drive 235, the company will unlock the speed limit for one occasion – with the proper paperwork, that is. We don’t know just what that paperwork entails, but we’re pretty sure it has something to do with insurance liabilities.

4. McLaren F1, $970,000: the McLaren F1 originally was just a concept car conceived by renowned Formula One race car designer Gordon Murray until he convinced McLaren CEO Ron Dennis to pony up some cash. It’s lighter and has more streamlined structure than most modern rivals despite having an extra seat. The driver’s seat is situated in the front middle, slightly forward of passengers seated to the left and right. Speeds top out at 231 mph with the rev limiter on, and 242.95 with the rev limiter removed.

5. Ferrari Enzo, $670,000: The Enzo is widely considered the most popular supercar ever built, reaching 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and topping out at 217 mph. Named for founder Enzo Ferrari, the car was designed to commemorate the company’s first Formula One title in the new millennium. Because just 400 were built, they’re going for upwards of $1,000,000 at auto auctions.

Sticker-shock notwithstanding, which of these would you most like to drive home stocked with a set of E3 car spark plugs? Tell us about your dream car on the E3 Spark Plugs Facebook fan page.

Star Cars: E3 Spark Plugs Can’t Wait for These 2012 Movies with Great Rides

Filmgoers and auto buffs, take note. 2012 offers up some great movie watching. And a few of the top-talked-about films of the year feature some beautiful rides, both real and conceptual. Here are a few films we here at E3 Spark Plugs are looking forward to if not for the edge-of-your-seat action, the cool story lines and the gorgeous leading ladies, then for the fabulous rides.

The Dark Knight Rises, July 20: That Bruce Wayne can be tough on cars. In 2008′s The Dark Knight, he crashed not only his day-drive, a new Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, during a car chase through Gotham City aka 15 blocks of Chicago’s Lake Street. As if he wasn’t having a bad enough day as it was, he also lost his Batmobile Tumbler to a bazooka-toting Joker. But in The Dark Knight Rises, Wayne is back behind the wheel in a gorgeous 2012 Lamborghini Aventador. At least, that’s according to paparazzi shots of the car on the set staged at Nottingham, England’s Wollaton Hall, which doubles as Wayne Manor. And it’s been confirmed that the Batmobile Tumbler, an undisputed fan favorite, is back.

The Great Gatsby, December 25: This adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 iconic novel of the same name is set for theatrical release Christmas Day and is sure to deliver the gift of some beautiful vintage auto-eye candy. Set in Long Island, NY (but filmed mostly in Australia), The Great Gatsby centers on Midwesterner Nick Carraway, who his lured into the lavish world of his nouveau riche millionaire neighbor Jay Gatsby with tragic consequences. While Tobey Macguire (as Carraway), Leonardo DiCaprio (as Gatsby) and Carey Mulligan (as Gatsby love interest Daisy Buchanan) are sure to impress, we’re most excited about the red and white 1929 Duesenberg Gatsby drives. Never mind that the story is set in 1922, seven years before this particular model was made. There’s no arguing against the cinematic aesthetics of a car driven by the likes of Clark Gable, Al Capone, Howard Hughes and Mae West.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation, June 29: When Cobra spy Zartan has most of the Joes assassinated, the remaining Joes band together to strike back. We promise this Dwayne Johnson and Channing Tatum-fronted film won’t be as cheesy as its 2009 predecessor, G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra. How is it that can we make such a promise? Because the official trailer shows Bruce Willis firing a giant gun from what appears to be the bed of a 1971 El Camino. ‘Nuff said.

Any 2012 movie you’re predicting to star great rides? E3 Spark Plugs wants to know. Post your thought on the E3 Facebook fan page. And remember to power your own film-worthy sports coupe with E3 performance spark plugs for a stronger, cleaner, smoother ride.

E3 Spark Plugs Duel in the Desert

E3 Spark Plugs Duel in the Desert

E3 team driver Rick Huseman in hot pursuit of the #99 of Kyle Leduc. Leduc claimed back-to-back wins at the "E3 Duel in the Desert" last weekend in Surprise, AZ. Photo courtesy of Lucas Oil.

Over the weekend things got HOT at the E3 Spark Plugs Duel in the Desert for the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series at Speedworld Off Road Park in Surprise, AZ. In other corners of the world, people often say it’s “Africa Hot” but, under the searing heat for the LOORRS Rounds 11 and 12, it was “Arizona Hot”. As temperatures soared to triple digits, the action on track was getting even hotter as drivers in all classes were battling for precious points with only four races remaining in the 2011 series.

Located just to the northwest of downtown Phoenix, Speedworld has always been known for its fast but punishing layout. A tough course that typically takes a toll on both man and machine. This year’s event was no exception. After posting back-to-back wins in the last two rounds at Glen Helen, Rick Huseman had his Monster Energy/E3 Spark Plugs Toyota truck race ready for Round 11 and grabbed an early lead in Saturday’s event. But, the star of the day (and the big winner for weekend in Pro 4 Unlimited) was Kyle Leduc in the popular #99 Rockstar/Makita Ford truck. Leduc would finish four seconds ahead of Carl Renezeder with Huseman in third.

As the sun rose over the Arizona desert, Sunday morning brought new opportunities for the E3 Spark Plugs Toyota race team to claim a victory in the E3 sponsored event. This day it would be Kyle’s brother Todd Leduc who would start on the pole for Pro 4 main event with Huseman starting inside on the second row. Huseman quickly grabbed second place on the opening lap of Round 12 but began to slow on lap four as suspension gremlins damaged the driveshaft on the E3 Spark Plugs Toyota truck. Up front it was battle of the brothers as Kyle began to pressure Todd before a late-race yellow flag caused an inevitable restart.

When the green flag waved, it looked like bumper cars on dirt as Todd Leduc was pin-balled from first to fourth. Brother Kyle slipped by for the lead with Renezeder running in third place behind Adrian Cenni. The multi-time off road champion wasted little time and moved his famous #17 Lucas Oil/General Tire Ford truck into second place. Renezeder would lean on Leduc for the lead but to no avail. Leduc got to the checkers first for his fourth win of the 2011 LOORRS season and his first sweep of the Pro 4 class at Speedworld Off Road Park. Huseman would limp home to a disappointing eighth place finish.

E3 racing fans can watch all the action from last weekend’s clash in the desert on Oct. 15th on CBS. The LOORRS teams have a few weeks off before the series heads to Sin City for Rounds 13 and 14 at the Las Vegas Speedway on Nov. 5-6. See you there!

E3 Motorcycle Fans Pack High-Point Raceway

Red Bull KTM rider Mike Alessi grabbed the 450cc holeshot at Round 3 of the Lucas Oil AMA MX National Championship at High Point Raceway. Photo courtesy of www.alessiracing.com.

Over the weekend, E3 Motorcycle Spark Plug racing fans turned out in record numbers to line the Pennsylvania hillside for the first East Coast round of the 2011 Lucas Oil AMA Pro MX Championship. Over the past thirty five years of outdoor motocross, High Point Raceway has become the measuring stick that determines which riders and teams are ready to make a run at the national championship title. This year, Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto would use Moto One to make a solid statement about his intentions to compete for the 450cc title.

Defending national champion Ryan Dungey grabbed an early lead but Villopoto wasted little time in passing the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider and pulling away to a huge lead. Current points leader Chad Reed had a bad start but would quickly begin picking off riders on his way to a fifth place finish in the opening moto. After recovering from early season injuries, Red Bull KTM’s Mike Alessi had an impressive ride at Mount Morris with a third in Moto One but was docked one position for jumping the gate at the start. Dungey would finish in second place with Yamaha’s Davi Millsaps in third.

Steep off-chamber turns, deep ruts and mud (lots of mud) would put a damper on Villopoto’s dominant performance in the day’s first race. To no one’s surprise, Mike Alessi’s big bore KTM pulled the holeshot in Moto Two but gave up the lead to a hard-charging Chad Reed. Villopoto and Dungey started working their way through the pack to a second and third place finish. Alessi would hold on for 4-4 finishes and fourth overall for the day. Dungey and Reed would round out the National podium with Villopoto claiming his first overall win of the season.

There is no rest for the weary as the Lucas Oil Pro MX Championship continues next weekend with Round 4 in Mechanicsville, MD, at the famed Budds Creek MX Park. With less than 35 points separating the top four riders in the 450cc class, E3 Spark Plug motorcycle race fans are expected to line the fences once again. If you’re looking for a spark plug that was “Born to Burn”, pick up an E3 replacement plug for your motorcycle at an authorized online dealer, or your favorite auto parts or discount store.
