E3 Spark Plugs Racing Fans Packed Glen Helen Raceway

The E3 Spark Plugs Racing fans turned out in record numbers for Round 9 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Truck National Championship at Glen Helen Raceway. Located at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California, Glen Helen Raceway has hosted some of the best off road races in history in both two-wheel and four-wheel categories. This year was no exception as sold-out crowds watched the best drivers in the world end up on their roof trying to find the fastest lines around one of the roughest tracks on the national circuit.

As the truly standing room crowd awaited the start of the Pro 4 Unlimited class, the top two qualifiers, Rick Huseman and Carl Renezeder, were sent to the back row having missed the mandatory driver’s meeting early in the day. That would put the #99 Rockstar/Circle K Ford truck of Kyle LeDuc on the front row alongside Adrian Cenni in the #11 BF Goodrich Tires Chevrolet. LeDuc took an early lead as the Traxxas/Monster Energy Toyota of Huseman was heading to the front.

Renezeder would bring out a full course caution after putting his #1 Lucas Oil/General Tire Ford on its side after the un-rhythm section before turn three. On the restart, local fan favorite Huseman charged to third place behind LeDuc and Cenni. He would later get by Cenni and took advantage of a LeDuc mistake that saw the Rockstar Ford truck land on all four after rolling over in the deep ruts. LeDuc would rally late to pressure the Toyota truck of Huseman for the lead but Huseman would claim his seventh victory in nine races. LeDuc held on for second ahead of Cenni in third.

Dungey Takes Control of the AMA MX Pro Championship

The 2010 AMA Lucas Oil MX Pro Championship had perfect weather for Round Six as the 450cc class traveled north to Buchanan, Michigan, for the popular Red Bud National. E3 Car Spark Plugs MX fans know that rookies aren’t supposed to win in the big bike class. But, somebody forgot to tell Rockstar Makita’s Ryan Dungey. Already this season, Dungey has won in the heat at Firestone MX in Texas, in the mud at High Point MX in Pennsylvania, in the sand at Budds Creek MX in Maryland, and in the mile-high altitude at Lakewood MX in Colorado. The rookie’s consistency on the track and focus off the track allows him to improve on lap times from when unloads until the checkered flag flies for the final moto.

The Red Bud track is most famous for a 130-foot step-up jump known as LaRocco’s Leap. The very long, fast, uphill jump requires riders to jump over the equivalent of a 5-story building. In Moto One, Red Bull Honda’s Andrew Short pulled his fifth holeshot of the season but gave way to a hard-charging Ben Townley. The Troy Lee/Lucas Oil rider Townley had missed the 2008 and 2009 AMA outdoor motocross seasons due to a nagging shoulder injury but has shown a lot of speed in 2010. With a few laps to go in the opening moto, Townley dropped his Lucas Oil Honda in a sandy rut letting Dungey, Chad Reed and Short slip by to claim the respective podium positions. Fellow Aussie Brett Metcalfe followed Townley home with Joe Gibbs Racing’s Josh Grant in sixth place.

Déjà vu in moto two as Red Bull’s Short took an early lead followed by Dungey, Townley and Reed. After following Short for a couple of laps, Dungey went underneath the Honda rider and took command of the race. Townley was next to get around Short followed closely by Reed. In his best performance of the 2010 AMA Lucas Oil Pro MX season, Reed made a late race charge to second. Townley would settle for third giving the Kiwi third overall for the day. Short would relinquish fourth in Moto Two to the Geico Powersports Honda of Brett Metcalfe. Yamaha’s Josh Grant went (6-6) for sixth overall, followed by Honda’s Kyle Regal (7-7) in seventh overall and Yamaha rider Ryan Sipes (8-8) for eighth overall.

The AMA Pro MX teams have next weekend off before traveling to Millville, MN, for the Lucas Oil outdoor national motocross championship. Do Car Spark Plugs Last 100K Miles?

Car spark plug designs have come a long way over the past 150 years since Belgian engineer Jean Joseph Étienne Lenoir used a Ruhmkorff induction coil to jump the spark that ignited distilled coal gas in his Lenoir 2-Stroke engine. In those earliest days of automotive development, a wealthy Frenchman could expect to get 10 kilometers or more before the disruptive discharge system needed routine maintenance. Today, a standing joke among auto mechanics is that you need to change your car’s spark plugs when you have your muffler bearings greased . . . meaning never. However, all jokes aside, there are a number of reasons to have your car spark plugs checked more often than every 10 years or 100,000 miles.

Although most cars and trucks use a 12-volt DC battery as an initial source of energy, the ignition system’s coil increases the low voltage input to a high voltage discharge by one to two thousand times. This high energy flow of electrical current sparks across the gap between the plug’s central and ground electrodes. The increase in the temperature of the compressed gas/air mixture results in a small explosion in each combustion chamber for every firing cycle of the engine. So, the actual road mileage for any spark plugs lifecycle is based on numerous variables such as the weather conditions, how the engine is used, the additives in the fuel, etc. In other words, it’s probably a good idea to check your car or truck spark plugs more often than every 100K miles.

Since most of today’s automotive engines use electronic ignition systems, the modern day tune-up is basically limited to changing the car spark plugs and replacing the motor’s air filter, or servicing the P.C.V. (positive crankcase ventilation) valve. Most experienced auto mechanics recommend that these items be inspected every 30,000 miles. Anytime that you notice a loss of engine power or reduction in fuel mileage, then an unscheduled tune-up should be considered to prevent more permanent damage to your motor. When your engine is misfiring or not running properly, excessive heat can leave the plugs worn or galling of the plug’s threads can occur in the motor’s cylinder head. This could potentially cost the owner much more in repair charges than the costs of routine engine maintenance.
