171 years ago this month, the first known spark plug was invented by Edmond Berger, historians say. Unfortunately, Berger failed to patent his spark plug invention, so documented history points to Sir Oliver Lodge of England, whose sons parlayed the “Lodge Igniter” into a profitable company founded in 1903. The next year, Albert Champion, a world renowned bicycle and motorcycle racer who made extra cash by handcrafting spark plugs and selling them to friends, moved from France to Flint, Michigan and founded Champion Ignition Company. Investor drama left Champion jobless, but he soon found himself appointed president of the AC Spark Plug Company formed with backing from Buick Motor Co. AC spark plugs were used in Charles Lindbergh’s and Amelia Earhart’s trans-Atlantic flights and fired the second and third stage rocket engines that took Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins to the moon.

Fast forward one century and the garden variety spark plug hasn’t changed much, outside of manufacturing materials and techniques to make them cheaper. That is, until E3 Spark Plugs entered the scene. We figured 100 years was plenty of time to go without a major advancement, and we had a gut feeling that a better, more environmentally sensitive product was possible. So, we headed back to school – literally – and recruited researchers specializing in combustion and engine dynamics from leading engineering universities.

The result was a totally revamped electrode design. Gone was the antiquated J-wire electrode. And after several years of testing and back-to-the-drawing-board drudgery, we debuted the DiamondFire spark plug design. The DiamondFire design features multiple sharp edges (rather than the traditional single edge) to the circular edge of the center electrode, allowing the spark to seek the path of least resistance. This design boosts combustion pressure and completely burns the fuel/air mixture within the cylinder, allowing for higher power output, increased fuel economy and reduced emissions. That means you get more horsepower using less fuel and leaving less mess in the air, helping to reduce air pollution and global warming.

We have verified every claim via testing using the most sophisticated diagnostic equipment available and via independent testing. Even the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) reports that E3 Spark Plugs’ DiamondFire technology offers “clear advantages in HC and CO emissions control while at the same time improving power and fuel economy.” In fact, E3 Spark Plugs is the only spark plug mentioned in EPA rulings as a supplemental emissions control device.

We’ve come a long way, baby! Find out for yourself how E3’s DiamondFire spark plugs can improve the performance of your engines from your Winnebago to your weedeater. Browse our website to find and E3 spark plugs dealer near you or send us a comment or question via our convenient online email form.

Planning one more trip out to the slopes before the springtime thaw comes around? Make sure you finish the snowmobiling season with a blast by installing E3 Spark Plugs in your snowcat. Our DiamondFire technology sets us apart from all other spark plug makers, allowing for improved engine performance and cleaner emissions. Whether you’re a mountain dweller using your snowmobile for day-to-day running, racing professionally or just occasionally kicking up some power for the sheer fun of it, E3 Spark Plugs can boost your snowmobile engine’s performance.

E3 Spark Plugs are designed specifically to increase engine horsepower, improve fuel efficiency and reduce engine emissions that harm our environment and air quality. We spent years developing a whole new electrode design in our own laboratories and testing them in two leading engineering universities with the help of some of the nation’s top researchers and professors specializing in combustion and engine dynamics.

The result is E3 Spark Plugs’ patented Edge-to-Edge electrode that gives your automobile, power sports vehicle and snowmobile spark plugs a clean power boost. Independent tests show that using E3 Spark Plugs increases engine horsepower by up to 12 percent compared to conventional spark plugs and can extend your engine’s life. Key is our exclusive DiamondFire configuration that allows snowmobile and other power sports vehicle engines to run more efficiently and burn fuel more completely than does traditional spark plug technology. It works by getting the flame process started a notch earlier so that the air and fuel mixture already in the combustion chamber is fully burned rather than vented off into the air we breathe.

Of course, results will vary depending on your snowmobile engine’s class and operating conditions, but those firing on E3 Spark Plus typically use as much as 13% less gas than those using standard spark plugs. This means a reduction in carbon monoxide emissions by up to 42% and hydrocarbon emissions by up to 50% in long term use according to several independent studies.

So, if you really want to kick up some powder before the snow fades into springtime, choose E3 Spark Plugs for your snowmobile. Visit our online catalog to determine just the right snowmobile spark plug you need, then click the Power Sports link to find out where you can buy yours. Need more information? Use our convenient online email form to reach an E3 Spark Plugs representative today.

Monster trucks rumbled onto the scene way back in 1974 from the garage of Bob Chandler. The original monster truck, “Bigfoot” took the world by surprise and started a craze that just keeps getting bigger and wilder every year. Originally used as Chandler’s work truck and occasional for promotional events for his 4×4 parts and service company, Bigfoot attracted lots of attention, leading to its first paid gig in 1971, a Denver car show. In 1981, Chandler decided to roll Bigfoot over a couple of junk cars and see how audiences would react. The result made history and eventually led to the monster truck team racing concept.

Thirty five years later, audiences are still wild for monster trucks and their car-crushing, wheelie-popping, obstacle-jumping antics. E3 Spark Plugs is thrilled to be the title sponsor of this year’s Monster Truck Nationals and the series’ new owner The Promotion Company-Family Events, which plans to keep thrilling audiences with the nation’s top monster trucks and best driver, plus add new supporting acts to the family-friendly shows.

“This audience appreciates big engine power and nothing helps deliver that power better than our DiamondFire design spark plugs,” says E3 Spark Plugs Vice President of Sales and Marketing Steve Joiner. “Since the E3 Spark Plugs Monster Nationals Presented by Lucas Oil attracts a lot of families, we can also stress the family-friendly story of how we are helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and global warming by reducing fuel consumption. Performance with economy for a better environment-we think it’s a message that will hit home with this audience.”

E3 Spark Plugs also was the 2009 title sponsor of the World Series of Off-road Racing (WSORR) E3 Spark Plugs Show-Me-State Showdown.

SEMA Show 2009 just wrapped and E3 Spark Plugs is revved up about all the innovative new products and technologies in the automotive industry. This season, the common thread among major auto shows is a focus on fuel efficiency and leaner, greener products, technologies and approaches. E3 Spark Plugs felt right at home.

Aside from all the spectacular new vehicle models, and of course the beautiful female models accompanying them plus a host of TV and racing celebrities, a main attraction at SEMA Show 2009 was the Making Green Cool Zone. This exhibit area featured dozens of innovative solutions for refining existing automotive platforms including the internal combustion gasoline engine, and creating new products using alternative fuels and energy sources. E3 Spark Plugs is all about going green. In fact, our name reflects our original mission of improving ecology, efficiency and energy. Our DiamondFire spark plug technology is proven via extensive tests by the Environmental Protection Agency to reduce toxic emissions including Hydrocarbon (CO2) and carbon (CO) emissions and fuel usage, while improving horsepower and torque.

Among the coolest things we spotted were GM’s new, highly anticipated E-Rod line of crate engines that are emissions-compliant with all of the hardware needed to make a vintage hotrod run as clean as any new vehicle. GM demonstrated one of its E-Rod engines with a 1955 Chevrolet two-door coupe. And w loved 3M’s Wraptivo designer car wraps, which allow you to create your own exterior look, panel by panel, on the Wraptivo computer. The machine then spits out adhesive-backed film that you apply to your vehicle using the heat of a hair dryer.
We also rubbed elbows with a host of celebrities including Rusty Wallace, UFC/MMA fighters, Maxim Magazine models, pro bull riders, authors of top selling automotive books and stars of automotive TV shows such as “Pimp My Ride,” “Overhaulin,” “Car Crazy TV” and “Two Guys Garage.”

E3 Spark Plugs will make another showing at SEMA 2010, Nov. 2-5 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Mark your calendars.

Ever have a problem cranking up your ATV or snowmobiles engine in cold weather? Most of the time, the issue lies in your batteries cold cranking amps and your spark plugs ability to develop a good spark in lower temperatures. E3 Spark Plugs, the leading manufacturer of automotive and small-engine spark plugs, recently released its new line of powersport plugs, which offer a simple and easy way to ensure that your engine will fire no matter what the temperature. With over 85% coverage for motorcycles and snowmobiles, and a more than majority coverage for ATV’s and personal watercraft vehicles, E3’s powersport plugs also improve horsepower and increase fuel efficiency.

E3 president, Todd Arey, says, “It was a very natural progression to begin testing and development for applications in this niche enthusiast marketplace. Now, when you’re pushing the performance limits of your machine, there’s an E3 spark plug to give you even more horsepower and quicker, easier startups.”

The E3 DiamondFIRE spark plug design features an open, diamond-shaped electrode that offers fuller flame growth and more complete fuel combustion, thus providing reduced emissions, increased horsepower and better engine durability. Whether it’s a motorcycle, snowmobile, ATV or jet-ski, E3 has you covered with the advanced technology your machine needs.

E3 Spark Plugs with DiamondFIRE Technology is proud to announce that it is the only spark plug available today that is recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a supplemental emissions technology device. This is due to the recent EPA testing, in which E3 was involved, that pushed the government to tighten emissions standards for new gasoline-powered lawn mowers, weed trimmers, and boat engines, requiring those engines to reduce the amount of smog-causing pollution they are allowed to emit.

Due to E3’s reputation in the lawn and garden market for improving power and reducing emissions, they were among a small group of product manufacturers selected to take part in the EPA testing. It’s E3’s unique forged ground electrode that ensures the fastest, most complete burn of the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder resulting in a 3-13% increase in fuel economy, up to 58% reduction in CO and hydrocarbon emissions, and a 6-12% improvement in horsepower, depending on engine class, when utilized under typical operations.

“EPA’s new small engine standards will allow Americans to cut air pollution as well as grass,” EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson said in a statement. “These standards help fight smog in our neighborhoods and waterways as we continue to improve the environmental landscape.”

The new EPA regulations will take effect in 2010 and 2011. Once fully implemented, all of the new standards together will eliminate emissions totaling 600,000 tons of hydrocarbons, 130,000 tons of nitrogen oxide and 1.5 million tons of carbon monoxide annually. Hydrocarbons and nitrogen-oxide are well known for contributing to ground-level ozone deterioration, or smog, which can cause respiratory illness and even death. Ground-level ozone also contributes to global warming, ranking as the third-biggest greenhouse gas generated by human activity.

Studies show that one riding lawn mower emits as much pollution in an hour as 34 cars. Environmentalists have also noted that the move would help protect the environment and promote energy efficiency. Because spark-ignition engines release as much as 25 percent of their gas unburned in their exhaust, the EPA also estimates that the regulations, when fully implemented, will lead to a more efficient combustion process that will save about 190 million gallons of gasoline each year.

“We were proud to participate in the EPA testing and we know that our product is helping to lead the charge in the fight for cleaner air,” said E3 Spark Plugs President Todd Arey. “At E3, our goal is to continuously strive to achieve better engine efficiency, which leads to less waste and more fuel savings. We are happy with our products current results but we will never quite striving for even better.”

The new EPA regulations, which were originally scheduled to come out by the end of 2005, apply to lawn and garden equipment of 25 horsepower or less, as well as to golf carts and all gas-powered personal watercraft and inboard and outboard boat engines.

E3 Spark Plugs, the fuel efficient, low emissions, high performance spark plug that is now available for most small engine, powersport and automotive applications, has completed it’s inaugural year as a sponsoring member of the grassroots motorsports Team Lucas program.

Team Lucas, owned and operated by Lucas Oil Products, Inc., is the group that oversees the companies title sponsorships of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, Lucas Oil Pro Pulling Series, Super Clean ASA Modified Series, World Series Of Off Road Racing, IHBA Hot Boat Series, Lucas Oil Speedway, Lucas Oil Production Studios, and a presence in the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts Lucas Oil Stadium. These Team Lucas entities represent over 400 annual live events plus 200 plus hours of prime time television programming on ESPN2, the Speed Channel and Versus Networks.

E3 President, Todd Arey, says, “We are so pleased to be part of such an exciting array of racing series in support of grassroots motorsports. The same initiative and creativity that sparks the drive to race is found at E3, and Team Lucas provides us a way to advertise our amazing line of plugs to racers and race fans alike at local tracks all across the U.S. Team Lucas has delivered in every way and during this first year of the sponsorship we have received an overwhelming positive response. We can’t wait to see what 2009 holds for our company.”

During it’s inaugural year of involvement, E3 found itself as the title sponsor of the World Series of Off-Road Racing (WSORR) E3 Spark Plugs Show-Me-State Showdown held in May, on the hood of driver Jason Patison’s NASCAR Whelen Super Late Model Series and NASCAR Camping World Series car where he finished on the podium three times this season, on WSORR driver Kevin Probst’s Pro 2WD truck where he finished in 2nd place in the points for the season and had three 1st place finishes.

“I enjoyed being able to bring E3 a few of their very fist victories in racing,” said driver Kevin Probst. “We scored 8 top 5 finishes, and finished 2nd in the points for the season, while running the E3 branded truck. That truck was definitely the fastest truck in the series and Todd and his crew at E3 were very instrumental in our 2008 success. Every where we went everyone was curious about E3 so I’m glad that while we were out there winning races, we were also able to help them brand their product.”

Bob Patison, Lucas Oil President, says, “E3 has been an excellent addition to Team Lucas, a quality company with a quality performance product. We’re excited to see what the future holds for Team Lucas and for the opportunity for greater brand awareness for all nine companies that compose Team Lucas.”

Other current Team Lucas sponsors include K&N Engineering, General Tire, Jim Beam, Super Clean, Dixie Choppers, R&L Carriers, and Fatheadz Eyewear.
