How to Clean the E3 Spark Plugs in your Lawn Mower

Now that spring has sprung, it’s time to clean or replace your lawn mower spark plugs. Across the country, lawnmowers are emerging from garages and garden sheds after months of being stored away. Just like a car that’s been sitting for a while, your lawn mower, whether it’s a riding mower or push mower, needs a yearly tune up too.

To clean your spark plug you will need a  socket wrench, brake cleaner and a soft cloth.  First, locate the plug and then brush off the housing surrounding it. Remove the black plug wire by lifting the spark plug cap that covers the end of the plug. Use the socket wrench to unscrew the spark plug by turning it counterclockwise. Once removed, check the electrode tip and ceramic insulator for build up or wear.

Spray the dirty lawn mower spark plug with brake cleaner and let it soak for about ten minutes. Wipe the plug with your clean cloth or rag to remove the residue. If needed, repeat the spraying, soaking and wiping several times. Make sure you end up with a spark plug that is clean from the threads to the contact point. If the spark plug shows unusual signs of wear or doesn’t come clean, consider replacing it with a new one.

NOTE: When replacing your mower’s spark plug, always check your lawnmower manual to make certain the new spark plug is the right heat range and gapped correctly for your particular engine. If the gap is not right, alter the gap according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Visit the E3 Spark Plugs’ Spark Plug Installation Recommendations web page for information regarding gap and torque for various applications.

Reinstall the plug manually being careful not to allow any debris to fall into the spark plug hole. A good rule of thumb is to screw the spark plug in as tight as you can by hand, and then give it one more quarter turn with the socket wrench. Remember, a blocked or dirty air filter can also affect the performance of your lawn mower spark plug. So, clean or replace filters as part of your mower’s annual tune-up.

E3 lawn mower spark plugs are sold at numerous consumer retail outlets including Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, The Home Depot, Pepboys Auto, Sears, O’Reilly Auto Parts, and on Amazon.com. Warehouse distributors Keystone Automotive Operations, Motor State Distributing, Performance Warehouse and Speedway Motors sell E3 Spark Plugs products to other distributors and retail locations.

Don’t forget to check our E3 Spark Plugs Lawn & Garden Catalog to identify the best spark plug for your lawn mower, chain saw and other outdoor power equipment.

E3 Spark Plugs Congratulates Robert Stout on his Historic Toyota Long Beach Grand Prix Win!

E3 Spark Plugs sponsored Robert Stout, of Brownsburg, Ind. has won the Touring Car class race at the Toyo Tires World Challenge at Long Beach Presented by Bondurant.  At just over 18 years of age, the win makes him the youngest winner in World Challenge.   He started second in class, but grabbed the lead from pole sitter Nick Wittmer by the first time past the line.  By lap seven his lead was stretched to over 10 seconds and he raced to a 19.666-second margin of victory.

“I felt like I got off to a decent start,,” Stout said. “I worked my way around Nick [Wittmer] a lap or so after the start. I heard he had some problems over the radio. I knew I had a pretty good gap over second place at that point and I tried to take it as easy as I could.”

Even with the big lead, the end of the race had a couple of nervous moments for Stout.

“With about 10 laps to go, I started to have some problems with the left rear,” he said. “I didn’t even know if I was going to make it, so I really tried to take it easy through the right handers. But the car came through and we made a first place finish. This is one of the biggest races in the world. I couldn’t ask for anything more than to win at Long Beach.”

Stout’s win allows him to inherit the Touring Car Drivers’ Championship lead with 350 points. Meyer (281), Todd Buras (264), and Gardner (263) trail Stout after three of 12 races.  The race from Long Beach will be broadcast May 1 at 4:30 p.m. (EDT) on Versus.

“We at E3 Spark Plugs are proud to be associated with such a fine young talent as Robert Stout, congratulate him on his win, and look forward to a long partnership as he continues his racing career.” said Todd Arey, president of E3 Spark Plugs.

E3 Spark Plugs Sponsors Michigan Tech’s Annual Undergraduate Expo

E3 Spark Plugs is proud to sponsor Michigan Technological University’s Undergraduate Expo 2010, featuring the work of dozens of incredibly gifted students whose research and inventions could help change the face of automotive, aviation, gaming, or even medical technology. Entries ranged from a robotic lawn mower to a remotely operated military vehicle; an automatic jar and can opening device to a wireless cardiopulmonary monitor. A few automotive related projects included an air-driven moped, a hybrid off-road wheel chair and several projects designed to analyze and improve automotive climate control devices. Others involved the use of alternative fuels and automotive computing.

This year’s expo featured not just Michigan Tech students, but student from high schools statewide plus college and high school teams from Puerto Rico and Universidad del Turabo in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. More than 100 student projects were displayed, showcasing Michigan Tech’s “education in action” and affording participants real-world experience in discover-based learning, interdisciplinary teamwork, product and device design, leadership, entrepreneurship and working hand-in-hand with industry leaders serving as project sponsors.

E3 Spark Plugs has a fondness for Michigan Tech, one of the two leading universities where top professors of combustion and engine dynamics helped develop and test E3′s diamond fire technology before it the market. Today, our company proudly supports the work of numerous Michigan Tech researchers. Recent work at the university’s Keweenaw Research Center involves E3 spark plugs in automotive and snowmobile engines. A new, cutting-edge laboratory will feature a pressure vessel that can withstand pressures and temperatures that occur in most combustion applications, such as inside spark plugs. This pressure vessel will allow scientists to study issues involving transport phenomena and thermo-chemical processes, plus related issues including flammability and safety; spark-ignited and diesel fuel-air mixing and combustion; and bio-fuels and alternative fuels mixing and combustion.

If your company is involved in or would benefit from technological research, consider sponsoring a team or being an event sponsor or judge for next year’s Michigan Tech Undergraduate Expo.

E3 Spark Plug Design Burns Faster, Stronger and Cleaner than Conventional Competitive Designs

Compared to older competitive designs, E3 Spark Plugs’ patented DiamondFire technology was recently and conclusively proven to provide more rapid and robust combustion by research engineers at Michigan Technological University.

In reality, spark plug technology hasn’t changed much since the original “J-Wire” side-wire electrode was developed and patented in 1904 and used in the Model T Ford.  Real-time combustion images were captured during advanced testing methods employed at Michigan Tech, a nationally-acclaimed automotive research facility, to show a comparison between conventional competitive designs and E3’s revolutionary DiamondFire technology. The images prove that E3′s “diamond-shaped” side-wire electrode projects the combustion spark in a way that more quickly ignites the air/fuel mixture, thereby creating a significantly faster and larger flame kernel.

In effect, this burns more of the available fuel, resulting in increased combustion efficiency for improved power and fuel economy with reduced emissions.

“I have had an active role in the automotive industry for about forty years, so new technology surprises are rare to me. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the scientific data from Michigan Tech when they tested the new E3 technology”, stated Jim McFarland, veteran automotive engineer, and Research consultant for E3.

While conducting engine dyno tests comparing E3 technology to competitive brands, Jeremy Worm, lead Research Engineer for the Advanced Power Systems Research Center at Michigan Tech stated, “We found that the E3 spark plug produces a faster burn, especially in the early stages of the combustion process.  In an engine, the early burn duration translates to the stability of the combustion process.  By making that early burn more stable, we can run more dilution in the cylinder, and that directly translates into improved engine efficiency.”

Backed by a five year, 100,000-mile warranty, E3 Spark Plugs with DiamondFire technology, are now available for most automotive and motorsports applications at automotive retail stores nationwide.  For more information and complete test results, visitwww.e3sparkplugs.com.
