Ford Wants Your Teen to Text While Driving – But Only on their Innovative Training Course

Ford's Driving Skills for Life program shows teens just how dangerous common behind-the-wheels distractions can be.

Ford’s Driving Skills for Life program shows teens just how dangerous common behind-the-wheels distractions can be.

Your kids call it “summer vacation,” but rescue workers call it the “100 Deadliest Days.” Car crashes are the No. 1 cause of death for teenagers in the United States, and invariably, teen-involved auto accidents spike during the three months that school is out for the summer each year.

E3 Spark Plugs urges parents of teens to consider these facts and stats:

  • Car accident deaths double during the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day over the rest of the year combined;
  • Teens are responsible for nearly 50 percent more drunk driving accidents during the summer months than during the rest of the year;
  • Teen drivers average 44 percent more hours behind the wheel during the June, July and August break than during the nine months that school is in session – 23.6 hours compared to 16.4;
  • 23 percent of teen divers are likely to drive with three or more fellow teenagers in their car during the summer, while just six percent more likely to do so during the school year;
  • 72 percent of teens regularly stay out late during the summer evenings;
  • 24 percent of teen drivers admit they get behind the wheel while they’re tired during the summer.

Consider also that 85 percent of teens admit to texting while driving and 87 percent admit to speeding regularly. If you’re the parent of a teen with a set of wheels, it all paints a scary picture. That’s why for the past 10 years, Ford has brought its Driving Skills for Life program to high schools nationwide.

The program challenges teens to test their driving skills while dealing with common distractions. And most find that it ain’t as easy as they believe.

Says one reporter who took the challenge: “We tested Ford’s distracted-driving course, tasked with texting and driving while maintaining a normal speed and dodging cones. Our text message was nonsensical, and we killed a cone.”

Ford also recommends its innovative MyKey system, standard in Ford vehicles since 2010. The system allows parents to program the ignition or push-start system in their teens’ vehicle via a separate administrator’s key. Parents can select or disable features such as muting the radio until the front passengers buckle their seatbelts, cutting off the electronic throttle at a certain speed, and blocking incoming phone calls and text messages on a mobile phone using Ford’s Sync telematics system.

To help keep your teens safe on the road this summer, visit Ford’s Driving Skills for Life website and locate the scheduled event nearest your home. Got other tips for protecting your young drivers? Post them on the E3 Spark Plugs Facebook Fan Page.

E3 Reveals More on Upcoming Need for Speed Game, Film

Actor Aaron Paul of "Breaking Bad" fame stars in the upcoming "Need for Speed" film based on the enduringly popular video game series.

Actor Aaron Paul of “Breaking Bad” fame stars in the upcoming “Need for Speed” film based on the enduringly popular video game series.

E3 – No, not E3 the spark plug maker, E3 the Electronic Entertainment Expo – revealed a few tantalizing tidbits of new information about the upcoming Need for Speed: Rivals video game and the feature film starring Breaking Bad alum Aaron Paul.

Newly wed to a beautiful blonde and looking entirely unlike his famous meth-pushing character, Paul made a celebrity appearance at the E3 Conference on Monday and filled in an eager audience with some crowd-pleasing details. First up – the November 19 release of Electronic Arts’ Need for Speed: Rivals for Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 4, Playstation 3 and PC. Gamers will get to choose whether to be a cop or run from them.

Paul also announced more information on the Need for Speed film set for release next March. As we reported last year, Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks partnered with EA to produce a film based on the best selling game franchise which debuted in 1994. At the time, actor Taylor Kitsch was in talks with producers for the lead role. Liam Hemsworth, Brenton Thwaites and Luke Bracey also were considered, but the two-time Emmy winner Paul ultimately won the role.

The film’s IMDB.com blurb reads: “Fresh from prison, a street racer who was framed by a wealthy business associate joins a cross country race with revenge in mind. His ex-partner, learning of the plan, places a massive bounty on his head as the race begins.”

Ridiculous stunts and crazy beautiful cars are definite in both the game and the film. At the E3 Conference, Paul unveiled the game’s and the film’s hero car – a special-edition 2014 Ford Mustang apparently based on the Shelby GT500 and featuring a supercharged 5.8-liter V8 with 900 hp along with a custom wide-body kit – not exactly your stock Mustang GT. Also cast in the film is an F-450 truck dubbed “The Beast.”

“Fast & Furious 6″ Slams into Theatres This Week

"Fast & Furious 6" hits theater screens nationwide this Friday.

“Fast & Furious 6″ hits theater screens nationwide this Friday.

One of the most successful movie franchises in history revs up again, slamming into theatres across America this Friday. The creative spark plugs fueling the Fast & Furious 6 have delivered another fast-paced, fiery, fun film that includes a few surprises.

In the latest Fast & Furious sequel our hero team has left their former lives in the dust, having toppled the operation of a Brazilian drug lord and taking $100 million of his money with them. But all that cash and the new lives they’ve built can’t replace the families and lives they’ve left behind. So when Special Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) turns up looking a lot like his G.I. Joe character and asking for help in taking down an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers wreaking global havoc across 12 countries, Dom (Vin Diesel) can’t help but be pulled back into his old profession for one last gig – especially when he learns the criminal crew’s leader Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) is holding his presumed-dead lover, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez).

Next thing we know, the Fast & Furious pack is back together, anxious for one last shot at clearing their names and reclaiming the lives they left behind – And it’s vehicular mayhem at its CGI-enhanced best. Among the visual cine-candy: a multi-car chase through the streets of Paris; a sports car posse vs. raging military tank battle down a cliff-side highway; a crazed attempt to permanently ground a jumbo cargo jet while it’s taking off across the world’s largest stretch of tarmac; and a few scenes wherein certain characters could really use a wingsuit.

While a critic or two has knocked the film for a few “illogical” and “unrealistic” scenes, we beg to … well, agree. But those criticisms are just the appeal. Nobody goes to A-list-cast car chase films looking for the logical. Uh uh. We want crazy, over-the-top, never-gonna-happen-off-screen stuff. We want beautiful cars, vicious villains, bulging-bicep-baring heroes and gorgeous heroines who know their way around high-powered sports car engines. Fast & Furious 6 delivers all that in spades.

Check out the trailer below and post your thoughts on the E3 Spark Plugs Facebook Fan Page.

Gearheads & Gamers Rejoice – Gran Turismo 6 will be Home for the Holidays

Gran Turismo 6 for PlayStation 3 will be released just in time for the 2013 holiday season.

Gran Turismo 6 for PlayStation 3 will be released just in time for the 2013 holiday season.

Hear that sound, gearheads and gamers? That’s your wallet cringing, backed by your inner teenager rejoicing at the news that Gran Turismo 6 for PlayStation 3 will be released just in time for the 2013 holiday season. Legendary GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi himself made the announcement at a celebration marking 15 years of the 70-million-selling series earlier this week.

The “Real Driving Simulator” promises a full battery of cool features including a collection of new cars that brings the roster to more than 1,200. And players get more customization options than ever before, assuring you’ll be able to rock your ride like no one else’s. You’ll speed through 33 locations and 71 layouts from day one, and more will be added online in the near future. Among the new tracks: the UK’s famous Silverstone Circuit. There’s also a revamped GPS-enhanced course maker function that will take you through some serious global scenery. A new engine improves game performance and an overhauled user interface make for simpler operation and shorter load times.

Thus far, info released to the press says GT6 is just for PlayStation 3 with smartphone, tablet and PC compatibilities. But Yamauchi says the company does have a GT6 version for PlayStation 4 in mind. Maybe next year?

“We’re pleased to deliver GT 6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform. However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments,” he told the crowd. “I already have many ideas for things I want to achieve in the next 15 years of Gran Turismo!”

Three Classic Cars that Won’t Suck Your Wallet Dry

A mint-condition beauty like this one will set you back a pretty penny. But as a fixer-upper, the Ford Torino is among the most affordable classic cars.

A mint-condition beauty like this one will set you back a pretty penny. But as a fixer-upper, the Ford Torino is among the most affordable classic cars.

Got a little Christmas jingle left in your pockets? If you’re an auto enthusiast resolving to make your first classic car purchase in 2013, E3 Spark Plugs has a few suggestions that won’t break the bank. Here are our top three picks among the most affordable classic cars.

Triumph Spitfire

Named for the British World War II fighter plane, the Triumph Spitfire is as iconic as it gets for small, two-seater, convertible British sports cars. The most desirable is the Mark I, the car’s first generation produced from 1962-1964. But far more accessible is the Mark IV, made from 1970 to 1974. You should be able to pick one up for between $2,500 and $4000, though in better condition, they may run upwards of $6,000

Volvo PV544

Designed after the 1942 U.S. Army Staff Car, the Volvo PV544 debuted in 1958 and remained in production until 1966. They were a dime a dozen a decade ago, but are becoming fewer in number and higher in value. You’ll find them with one of two engines – the B16 or the B18. B16 engines are cheaper, but good luck finding replacement parts. You’re better off going with a B18 model, as replacement parts can still be ordered at the counter of your local Volvo dealer. Expect to pay between $5,000 and $8,000.

Ford Torino GT

If you’re considering a Ford Tornio GT, go for the 1968 Fastback model. The sloping roofline that glides right into the edge of the trunk lid made for some serious aerodynamics that proved advantageous on the race track and with the ladies. The recommended 302 V8 and 390 V8 engines won’t do you any favors at the gas pump, but the sleek looks will make up for it. Yours will run you $2,500 to $7,000.

Which classic car are you eying? Post your thoughts on the E3 Spark Plugs Facebook fan page.

Best Vehicles for Surviving Mayan / Zombie Apocalypse

Preparing for the Mayan apocalypse? You’re gonna want one of these.

If you’re anxiously awaiting a coming apocalypse, whether of the Mayan or zombie sort, E3 Spark Plugs has good news for you. Out of the sincerest concern for you and your family’s post-apocalyptic welfare, we’ve put together a list of the five best rides for surviving the demise of the world as we know it. They’ll cost you, but hey – it’s only money and you likely won’t need much, what with that comet hurtling toward Earth and that massive solar storm expected to jack the global power grid.

  1. Conquest Knight XV: This $629,000 fully armored, bio-fuel powered SUV boasts bulletproof glass, run-flat tires, reinforced door hinges and a pretty luxe interior. The company is making only 100 of them, so you might be up for a fight.
  2.  Terra Wind: Got a big family? Load ‘em up in this amphibious RV that can travel 80 mph by land and seven knots on the water. Built by Cool Amphibious Manufacturers International, it’ll set you back $850,000.
  3. Popemobile: Defy the apocalypse Vatican-style. Take in the earth’s new landscape from the stylish comfort of your built-in throne surrounded by bulletproof glass. The zombies can see you, but can’t touch you – especially when you rev up the Mercedes-Benz engine.
  4. The Beast: That’s what they call President Obama’s $300,000 customized Cadillac. It’s got 8-inch thick armor plating, run-flat tires, tear gas cannons, firefighting equipment and a seal that wards off biochemical attacks. Secret Service agents not included.
  5. Bugatti Veryon Super Sport: If you lack the cojones to fight ‘em, just outrun ‘em instead. And you may as well do it in style. No production car on Earth can beat the Bugatti Veryon Super Sport, which tops out at 267.856 mph and runs a cool $2.4 million.

No matter which survival vehicle you choose, be sure to stock it with a set of E3 performance spark plugs for a stronger ride. The zombies will hate you for it, but the Mayans would have been impressed.

E3 Spark Plugs Digs Hyde Park on Hudson – and Fab FDR Cars

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his Plymouth PA Phaeton.

“The President. The First Lady. The King. The Queen. The Mother. The Mistress…One weekend would unite two great nations…After cocktails of course.”

That’s the tagline for the ever so slightly tawdry biopic that chronicles President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s not-so-secret romantic dalliance with sixth cousin Margaret “Daisy” Stuckley, focusing on the historic 1939 weekend visit by the King and Queen of the United Kingdom – the first ever British royal visit to the U.S.

Based on accounts penned in Stuckley’s personal diary, discovered after her death, Hyde Park on Hudson stars Bill Murray as FDR and Laura Linney as Stuckley. Samuel West as King George VI stresses about impending war while Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth clutches her pears over the thought of eating – gasp! – hotdogs at the history-making countryside picnic in upstate New York. But for us here at E3 Spark Plugs, the real star is the car – the specially designed, hand-operated (FDR’s polio robbed him of any use of his legs) 1930s convertible sedan.

Turns out, the New Dealer drove some very nice rides, including a 1931 Plymouth PA Phaeton and a 1932 DeSoto. FDR preferred open cars and loved to drive at break neck speeds through the country side, often purposely eluding the Secret Service guards that constantly surrounded him.

But unlike today’s standard presidential ride, FDR’s cars lacked armored protection. So, when the attack on Pearl Harbor propelled America into World War II in December 1941, the President’s men were scrambling. Back in the day, the government was prohibited from spending more than $750 (about $10,800 in today’s dollars) on any automobile. Imagine that. Ergo, armored cars would have busted the budget.

Fortunately, the agent in charge of the Secret Service’s White House detail had an idea. The Treasury Department had seized Chicago ganglord Al Capone’s 1928 bulletproof Cadillac in a 1931 tax evasion bust. It was green with black fenders – identical to the Caddies supplied to Chi-Town police and city officials. But it also had 3,000 pounds of bulletproof armor beneath the standard body, a windshield and windows made of recently developed, inch-thick bulletproof glass, flashing red lights behind the grille, a police siren and a police band receiver – all meant to throw off the G-men and other Prohibition enforcers. It was Capone’s confiscated Cadillac that FDR rode to deliver his famous “infamy speech” to Congress, asking for a declaration of war against the Axis Powers.

Hyde Park on Hudson is in theaters on a limited release now, wide release in January. Got another favorite presidential ride? Post your thoughts on the E3 Spark Plugs’ Facebook fan page.
